Larky is the world's only literary hippopotamus, and the biggest friend of the Larkspur Library.
Have you have seen him in the Larkspur Fourth of July Parade? You may have seen him in the Library --- maybe in the stacks browsing for a travel book about the coolest waters during a hot African summer?
Did you know how Larky became the famous mascot of the Larkspur Library? Larky was born in 1970. Over 300 school children from Larkspur and Greenbrae participated in a contest to name this rather benign book devouring hippo as a mascot. A panel of judges which included a San Francisco Zookeeper and a local radio personality selected Larky as the most descriptive name. With his paper mache head and flannelette suit, Larky has appeared at a number a library and civic events, plus the Fourth of July parade.
