What is the Larkspur Library Endowment Fund and Foundation? back to top

The Larkspur Library Foundation is a non-profit corporate entity, separate from the City, whose sole mission is to advance the public library of the City of Larkspur by raising funds from public and private donors. The Foundation has fulfilled that fund raising mission every year since it was formed in 1977, and it is one of the oldest non-profit organizations dedicated exclusively to supporting a local public library in Marin County, California.

How Can I Help the Foundation or Make a Contribution? back to top

You can become a patron of the Library and enroll with the Foundation by sending us your name, address, including email address, and we will be able to communicate with you about upcoming Foundation events to help the Library.

You can make a tax-deductible donation to the Larkspur Library Foundation and be assured that the funds will be used solely to support the "World's Greatest Little Library". Please see "Become a Supporter" above for the details on how to make a gift, bequest or other donation.

Who are the Friends of the Library? back to top

Many libraries in California have both a non-profit corporation to support a local library as well as an additional group of "friends" who also perform services for that library. Larkspur has both the Larkspur Library Foundation as well as unincorporated Friends of the Larkspur Library. The Friends have traditionally participated in book sales for the library, and more recently the Friends have hosted book club discussions, with authors of current books, as well as other literary events.

What are the finances of the Larkspur Library Foundation? back to top

The Larkspur Library Foundation maintains several funds to support the Larkspur Library, namely a permanent endowment as well as unrestricted general funds. At the present time, the endowment represents approximately forty percent of the Foundation's financial assets.

In addition, in the fall of 2005 the Foundation launched a new Building Fund to plant the seeds for a more permanent capital campaign that will begin when the City decides to renovate or replace the Larkspur City Library. Before such a campaign is commenced, our donors can earmark their gift to the Building Fund. The Foundation's building fund initiative in 2005 replicates the significant role the Foundation played in the last major renovation of the Larkspur Library in 1983.

The Foundation has traditionally raised money through an annual appeal as well as a raffle, and most of those annual revenues are used currently to support the Library. For example, see the 2005 gifts described above on our History and Mission page. Because the Foundation has made such continuous commitments, we will need further support from the community to achieve the much larger goal of significant support for a new or renovated library.

The Foundation files tax returns (Form 990) with the Internal Revenue Service which are available for inspection at the City of Larkspur Library. We seek to efficiently manage our funds and our donors' contributions in order to maximize support for the Larkspur Library.
